Squalid NYC Tenements... How some of my ancestors lived after arriving in New York in the late 1800s from Ireland.- Tenement Life 1860-1910

I made this slideshow from pictures in the archives of the NYC Dept of Tenement houses, from various Manhattan street scene photographs, and photos taken by pioneers like Jacob Riis who fought for better sanitary conditions among New York's poor. At the end is a 1-minute clip of one of the first motion pictures shot in NYC in 1903 by Thomas Edison, which shows a scene in the lower east side at the turn of the century titled "Move On"

This video, with narration from Jacob Riis' "How the Other Half Lives" and with photos of tenement housing and life in New York City at the end of the 19th century, provides an excellent insight into immigrant life in the US after the influx of the "new" immigrants.

Depicts scenes at the Immigration Depot and a nearby dock on Ellis Island. Appears to show, first, a group of immigrants lined up to board a vessel leaving the island, then another group arriving at the island and being directed off of the dock and into the Depot by a uniformed official. - Arrival Of Immigrants - Ellis Island 1906
